A Medical Marijuana (MMJ) Card, also known as a Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) Card in Maryland, can be beneficial in reducing uncomfortable withdrawal effects patients may experience towards the end of a methadone taper. This guide explains the application, registration, prescription, and verification processes of obtaining an MMCC card.

MMCC Application Process

After applying for and receiving your MMCC card through the State, follow these steps to certify it and obtain a medical marijuana prescription.

1. Go to onestop.md.gov
2. Click the register button in the top right corner.
3. Make a username (email) and password (Save this as you will need this for obtaining and verifying your prescription!)
4. Pay a $25 application fee.
5. Upload a valid driver’s license or state ID. (Passports, birth certificates, social security cards, etc. are not valid forms of ID.)
6. Follow application directions and upload a photo of yourself similar to a passport photo. (Search ‘Maryland MMCC picture requirements’ for guidelines. These must be followed exactly, or your application will be returned, and your registration fee will not be refunded.)
7. Verify your email (An email will be sent to you with a link. Click on the link to verify the email is valid. Check your spam folder if you cannot find it.)
8. Expect an email with your patient ID number in a few weeks to a few months. (Try typing MMCC in your search bar to make searching for it.)

MMCC Prescription Process

After applying for and receiving your MMCC card through the State, follow these steps to certify it and obtain a medical marijuana prescription.

1. Save your MMCC ID number once you receive it in an email.
2. See your primary care physician or a specialty medical cannabis health care center to certify your MMCC request and obtain a prescription. (We recommend Holistic Wellness MD, more information is on the last page. Some diagnosed mental health and physical health diagnoses may qualify, but ALL Substance Use Disorders will qualify, i.e., Opioid Use Disorder.)
3. A certification fee.
4. Your MMCC card should be mailed to you within a few weeks or months. (It is possible to purchase from a dispensary before receiving your MMCC card if you show an appropriate and valid State ID such as a driver’s license at the time of purchase.)
5. Once your MMCC is received, visit any certified dispensary of your choosing. (A valid State ID is required for purchases even after you receive your MMCC. Showing your MMCC without also showing a State ID will prevent you from purchasing.)

MMCC and Prescription Renewals

1. Your prescription (different from your MMCC card and certification) must be renewed yearly through your primary care provider or specialty medical cannabis provider.
2. Your MMCC card must be renewed with the State of Maryland every 6 years on onestop.md.gov. The cost is $25 per renewal.
3. Your MMCC status must be verified yearly. (see section below)

MMCC Verification Process

The purpose of this verification is to ensure that you are using cannabis for a documented medical reason and not illicitly. An MMCC certification should be verified online, printed out, and kept for your record. After receiving your MMCC from a physician, follow these steps to verify it online:

1. Go to onestop.md.gov
2. Login with your username and password (upper right corner of page)
3. Click on the dashboard (upper right corner of the page)
4. Scroll down and click on Personal Certifications
5. Scroll down to the Licenses and Certifications section at the bottom and click on your MMCC ID# on the left.
6. Scroll down to the last section, drag the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom and scroll to the right.
7. Click the green button labeled View Certifications.
8. Print the PFD to MMCC (card) for your record.
